Detty December 2023 in Accra proved to be an exhilarating spectacle for thrill-seekers, fun enthusiasts, and party-goers alike. The month brimmed with an abundance of top-tier events, leaving event-goers with decision paralysis amid the exciting offerings. As the festivities wound down, we turned to Accra's event-goers to determine their favorite bar of the season through our Accra Events Poll. With thousands of locals and event attendees casting their votes for their preferred party hubs, these were the top 10 bars that emerged as the ultimate favorites among the 83 contenders that were voted for.
(We subtracted the votes for the worst establishment from the votes of the best establishments to compile this list. For instance, if Bar X had 100 votes for "Best Bar" and 60 for "worst bar", their total number of votes is 40, then we calculated this as a percentage of the total votes submitted. These votes only reflect experiences from December 2023.)
1. GARAGE LOUNGE
It came as little surprise when Garage Lounge in East Legon emerged as the most highly voted establishment. The venue kicked off the season with a sensational concert featuring the internationally renowned artist, Shallipopi. Throughout the festive period, Garage Lounge continued to captivate its patrons with performances by Ruger on Christmas Day and a Welcome party with the melodic tunes of Kwabena Kwabena, among others. The lineup of events, presented in rapid succession, undoubtedly left a lasting impression on voters. Despite occasional complaints of overcrowding and reports of theft incidents around the venue, the vibrant December party atmosphere overshadowed negative experiences for many voters. Voters surely cited these certified concerts as their top reasons for the votes, with Ruger being the #1 reason. Additionally, voters appreciated the consistent entertainment, meticulous decor, infectious vibes, and carefully curated music selections by the DJs. With its spacious layout designed to enhance enjoyment, Garage Lounge provided an optimal setting for revelry and celebration throughout the season.
2. BLOOM BAR
Bloom Bar bid us a befitting farewell with their "Last Hurrah" lineup in December marking the end of the Bloom era as they prepare to relocate to the USA. Since its inception in 2017, Bloom Bar stood out as the hot spot for 'cool kids', and has been a seasonal favorite, particularly thriving during the Detty December period. It comes as no surprise that a significant percentage of voters ranked Bloom Bar as the second favorite of the season. From their Anniversary celebration to their Closing Party and everything in between, Bloom Bar consistently delivered memorable experiences for its patrons. Among their standout events was their legendary Day Party, widely acclaimed as one of Accra's finest. The allure of Bloom's Day Party transcends cultural boundaries, as even Ghanaians forsake "Ghana Man Time" to revel in the festivities.
3. POLO BEACH CLUB
For the fifth consecutive year, Polo Beach Club paid homage to its origins by hosting its highly anticipated annual December series of recurring events. Despite its enduring popularity, Polo Beach Club's ranking on this list may have been higher had it not been for the isolated reported incident involving shootings by foreign visitors at the venue. This event raised significant concern among voters, and although uncommon in Accra, a daily occurrence in the US and the UK (2 nations with some of the highest percentages of tourists to Ghana). However, following thorough investigations, it was determined that the shooting incident involved individuals from London during an altercation with a local. Despite this isolated incident, the experiences at Polo Beach Club consistently exceeded expectations, earning it a well-deserved spot in the Top 3 party venues in Accra over the festive season.
4. MAD CLUB
Despite being a recent addition to Accra's nightlife scene, MAD Club has swiftly ascended to become one of the city's favored hangout spots within the span of just a year. Since its inauguration in late May 2023, MAD Club has consistently impressed patrons with great music and performances; a trend that continued unabated throughout December 2023. From mesmerizing sirens to captivating fire breathers, belly dancers, contortionists, breakdancers, and an array of other talented performers, MAD Club spared no effort in captivating its audience event after event. It is no surprise, then, that MAD Club clinched the prestigious position of the 4th Best Bar of the season. Beyond its entertainment offerings, MAD Club and its adjacent 24/7 diner ensure that patrons are not only entertained but also nourished, further solidifying its high ranking on this list of top bars in Accra.
5. KRUNA NIGHTCLUB
Kruna Nightclub served up an exceptional dose of entertainment this season, so it came as no surprise when voters collectively acknowledged its efforts as worthy of a spot in the Top 5. Building on its continued success since its establishment two years ago, Kruna Nightclub collaborated seamlessly with its trusted hosts, DJs, and event organizers to deliver a series of unforgettable experiences throughout the month just as it does throughout the year. From its strategic location to its ever-growing base of loyal patrons, top-notch sound systems, and mesmerizing lighting, Kruna Nightclub has firmly established itself as a staple in Accra's nightlife scene, earning the admiration of enthusiasts across the city.
6. JAMESTOWN CO x ALLEY BAR
Alley Bar has secured its position as a beloved hotspot since its inception in 2019, consistently maintaining its status as a premier social destination in Accra as a result of its backstory, open door policy and location next door to ex-hotspot Plot 7. Following its expansion with the addition of Jamestown Co, Alley Bar x Jamestown Co offered partygoers even more room to revel in its vibrant atmosphere, and revel they did. With Jamestown Co's appeal to the alté crowd and Alley Bars pre-existing reputation, the unique 2-for-1 venue utilized this distinct advantage that they have over lone establishments to solidify its status as a top 10 contender in Accra's nightlife scene.
7. FRONTBACK
Although FrontBack may have slipped a few spots from its previous year's ranking, it remains a trusted presence in the Top 10 Detty December party establishments in Accra. For many voters, the same palpable excitement experienced in previous years was still very much alive. Particularly appreciated were the event lineup and the diverse atmospheres offered by different sections of the club. However, some voters expressed discontent with recurring issues such as consistently late starting times for events, lackluster enthusiasm from fellow patrons at times, limited seating availability, and sluggish service. Nevertheless, FrontBack, as a members-only club, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of its dedicated clientele, who cherish and appreciate its unique ambiance and exclusive offerings.
8. ACE NIGHTCLUB
Despite relocating and undergoing extensive renovations right before and during the Detty Season, Ace Tantra managed to secure 3.4% of the votes. The revamped Ace Tantra boasts an immaculate new look that undoubtedly warrants a higher position on the list. However, factors such as its new location and their targeting a different demographic contributed to its lower-than-expected ranking. The new venue exudes an air of elite sophistication, featuring a fusion of contemporary Greco-Roman and Middle-Eastern architectural styles. Notably, the availability of extra parking spaces has garnered praise, especially for those familiar with the parking woes at the old Ace establishment. 9. MOOD BAR
Despite not introducing many special events for the festive season this December, Mood Bar still managed to captivate 2.5% of voters with its distinct ambiance. The establishment opted to maintain its regular events lineup, which is familiar to patrons who frequent the venue throughout the year. The smaller size of Mood Bar was appreciated by patrons, as it fills up quickly compared to other establishments on this list. Additionally, it has become commonplace to encounter both local and international celebrities at the venue, adding to its allure. Voters highlighted celebrity sightings, the attractive female patrons, the convenient location, and the intimate size of the bar as their top reasons for including Mood on this list. However, they also acknowledged that the parking situation and the discomfort of outdoor seating during hot weather are areas where the establishment could improve.
10. ALORA BEACH CLUB
Wrapping up our list is none other than the Alora Beach Resort. With hit events like "On A Beach with Odumodu Blvck," the "Afro-swim" season starter, and the "Hey Ibiza Last Wave" with WatsupTV and DJ SkyMusic and more, it's no wonder Alora Beach Club earned its place with 2.3% of the votes (See Top New Establishments 22 - 23). Despite edging out the 11th establishment by a mere 8 votes, we wholeheartedly agree with the voters and partygoers who championed its inclusion. Alora Beach Resort offers a luxurious beachfront experience and ambiance, coupled with some of the most vibrant events and shows in Accra, and last December proved a testament to their enduring popularity. While voters expressed discontent with the double payment required for access to the luxury beach venue, they nevertheless relish the breezy vibes whenever they visit.
Accra's dynamic nightlife scene offers an array of exceptional bars with each contributing its own unique charm and ambiance to the city's social landscape. From the lively atmosphere of established favorites like Garage Lounge and Bloom Bar to the chic sophistication of newcomers like MAD Club and ACE, there's something to suit every taste and preference. These establishments have solidified their status as the 10 Best Bars in Accra, Ghana for December 2023 according to your votes.
