Last December was so full of parties and concerts, making plans was a daily struggle. After the fun wound down, I asked Accra for their favorite concert via Snapchat, Instagram and Google Forms. These were the results.
1. THE BLACK STAR LINE FESTIVAL
Definitely the biggest event to happen last Detty Szn, the Black Star Line concert put together by Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa wowed all 52,000 event goers with a quality concert that lived up to all expectations. With performances from beloved acts like Chance himself to T-pain and local favorites like Sarkodie and Stonebwoy, its no wonder 15.1% of the total votes went to the Black Star Line Festival, despite the looming disappointment the Kanye West's presence was merely a rumor.
2. DETTY RAVE WITH MR. EAZI
After taking break from organizing his beloved Detty Rave concert because of the pandemic, Mr. Eazi returned with the fire of 1000 suns. From ticketing to aesthetics to timing to security and performances, Mr. Eazi ensured that all bases were covered to the satisfaction of world-class expectations. He even went the extra mile to organize 4 pre-concerts on university campuses to build up hype for the main event. It is therefore no surprise to his over 11,000 Detty Rave Attendees and beyond that he scooped 12.5% of the total votes.
3. AFROCHELLA (AFROFUTURE)
One of the biggest annual events in Ghana, Afrochella (now Afrofuture) rose above their year of controversy and delivered 2 days of non-stop action to its almost 10,000 patrons. With intriguing artistic displays, body-moving DJ sets, unmatched energy from the local talents they scouted and the magnetism of the bigger promised acts, there was very little to complain about. The presence of Burna Boy, Asake, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and many more are undoubtedly the reason why Afrochella took 10.6% of the total votes submitted.
4. BLACK SHERIF MOZAMA DISCO CONCERT
Unlike the other concerts on this list, Black Sherifs concert is not yet an annual event in our Accra Detty December lineup. However, the concert was so well organized that even with the power outage during the crowd-favorite "Kwaku the Traveller" performance, it still garnered 9.9% of the votes submitted. Black Sherif performed intermittently to ensure his fans did not wait too long to see him. He also made some attention-grabbing wardrobe changes during his star-studded interludes which included the likes of Wendy Shay, Lasmid, La Meme Gang, the Asakaa Boys and many more. He gifted his fans a surprise performance with Sarkodie.
5. FREEDOM WAVE CONCERT
On Christmas day last year Shatta Wale wowed 40,000 fans with his annual Freedom Wave concert, which he held in collaboration with AMG Medikal. Shatta Wale is known to be one of the few local musicians who can fill the Accra sports stadium effortlessly, and that's exactly what he did on 25 December. Arriving on a motorcycle in his usual energetic Shatta Wale fashion and even stripping to his boxers halfway through his concert, it's no wonder the antics of our local Dancehall King garnered 8.7% of the total votes.
6. BHIM CONCERT
Stonebwoy's annual Detty December Bhim concert at the Grand Arena was all anyone could talk about on the 23rd of December and for good reason. From his back to back bangers to his star-studded lineup with Busy Signal, Costa Titch, Sarkodie, Efya, MzVee, Tinny, Darko Vibes, KiDi, Camidoh, FBS, Yaw Tog, Epixode, Kofi Jamar, Epixode, Lali x Lola, Fameye, Sefa, D-Black, Yaw TOG, Mr. Drew and Lasmid, there was something for everyone. 6.5% of voters agreed with this lineup.
7. PROMISELAND
After facing some intense backlash in the Twitter-verse for being "too-known" (ie. A standoffish snob who locals consider too big for his britches), King Promise made some updates to the lineup of his PromiseLand concert that 6.3% of the voters agreed with. The 10 Toes singer released a line-up of his features like Sarkodie, Omah Lay, Joe Boy, Joey B, Gyakie, Camidoh and more, which undoubtedly led to the huge turnout and eventual success of the event, despite the ongoing online 'boycott' at the time.
8. RAPPERHOLIC X CONCERT
Sarkodie has gifted us with 10 Rapperholic concerts since 2011. Over time, he has perfected his craft and streamlined his show such that even the nay-sayers and non-natives also enjoy his Rapperholic Concerts thoroughly. With appearances from Black Sherif, King Promise, Efya, Oxlade and more, attendees were thrilled all night with diverse styles of ofrobeats music. The consistency and familiarity of the concert now molded the event into one of the best December has to offer, which is why it comes as no surprise that 5.7% of voters included this in the Top 10 of the season.
9. AFRONATION
AfroNation came back with a bang after a three-year hiatus resulting from the COVID-19 Pandemic. With performances from Meek Mills, Tiwa Savage, CKay, P-Square, Stonebwoy, Black Sherif, Kamo Mphela, Dadju, Kidi, Camidoh, Gyakie and more, its surely a surprise that Afro-nation is not higher up on this list. The vote by only 3.4% of voters was no doubt due to the fact that headliners Asake, Rema and Skepta were unable to perform as a result of the security breach. Rowdy fans, most of whom were unable to purchase tickets tickets before they got sold out, overwhelmed the insufficient security at the gates. So although most of the acts were able to perform, the disappointed crowd of over 15,000 attendees appear to have held the safety scare against AfroNation.
10. MANI-FESTIVITIES
M.anifest took over the Bukom Arena with his annual Manifestivities concert, and 2.6% of voters loved it. From the organization, to the lineup of encouraging up and comers, to his performance of his bangers, the Manifestivities concert was an ultimate music experience. His line-up had some big names we saw all season like Gyakie and Kwesi Arthur, but it also included rare gems like the Yung D3mz, Cavemen, T'neeya, Juma Mufasa, Koo Kusi, and Tomi Thomas which added some uniqueness to his event.
